about

Welterweight announces the release of Country’d, 8 new songs by the “strings’n wood” band from Portland , ME.
Make no mistake, Country’d isn’t country, well, maybe a little bit…my mistake. Many of the songs look up at parentified classis country songwriting luminaries like Ernest Tubb, Harlan Howard, and Merle Haggard, and do the chore of carrying on their “sad clown” lyricism by employing twisted nursery rhymes and obtuse football references.

And with a childlike discovery of the 7th chord turnaround (a little knowledge is a dangerous thing), a number of these songs delve into sad-mad-glad Americana like they invented it, or something
As a collection, Country’d is about borders, both isolated and connected...protectionist and expansionist... like the heart of any good country.

Professionals might call it prolonged adolescence alongside a little arthritis, both influencing these loud/quiet storytellings of childhood, betrayal, longing, and dumb decisions. Singer/songwriter Doug Cowan, born and bred in rural Maine, survived on K-Tel Hits albums until discovering his brother’s record collection... ... more
